Is there any reason this isn't currently allowed? As far as I am aware IA is fine with TIFF and derives them properly.

I'm not completely up to speed with the pros and cons of TIFF vs PNG, but many people seem to feel that for best quality TIFF is the way to go. Seems unnecessary to require conversion to PNG.
