Since all scaled CAA images are converted to JPEG, which doesn't support transparency, transparent PNGs can look pretty ugly.
Example: https://musicbrainz.org/release/7c09bd96-1fa9-486b-bfaa-57e6b217715c/cover-art
Maybe they should simply be rendered with a white or black background before converting to JPEG?
The transparency issue with PNGs was addressed by the IA and I've been told that a fix will be deployed soon. A test of the new derivation has been run on the example given in this ticket, you'll see that the glitches exhibited in the screenshot aren't present anymore in the newly derived thumbnail. Similarly to CAA-117, existing images with these problems would have to be re-derived. I'll compile a list of those to send to the IA.
