Solina String ensemble is a 49-Key Keyboard Multi-orchestral synthesizer with Violin, Viola, Trumpet, Horn, Cello and Contra-Bass sounds. Each of those sounds could be manually turned on or off with a switch, which allows for a variety of ensemble configurations. These sounds when heard individually are quite unrealistic, but when combined as an Ensemble with the chorus effect engaged, the resulting sound becomes rich and melodious. It was used a lot in the 70s POP, jazz and disco music.
It was invented, manufacture by Eminent BV(An Electronic Instrument manufacturer based in the Netherlands). In North America, it was Marketed by ARP Instruments leading to its alias The ARP string synthesizer.
It’s major technology is based on The Eminent 310 Unique Electronic Organ. The main oscillator consists of twelve discrete tone generators with octave divide down to provide full polyphony. The instrument gets its distinctive sound from the built-in Chorus effect. There were four versions available:
SE-I was monoaural with a permanent chorus effect,
SE-II added an on/off switch for the chorus effect,
SE-III added stereo sound
SE-IV added LEDs
It was originally manufactured by Eminent Bv from 1974 to 1981. However, a company called Arturia manufactures a version of the Solina instrument called the Solina V. The price of the New Solina is 149 USD directly from the Arturia Website.
Notable uses:
Shine on you crazy Diamond: Wish you were here
Someone saved my life tonight: Elton John
Fool to Cry: The rolling stones
