When searching for an artist in the artist credit editor (but it works for any entity search field used in the editing interface), the indexed search is used by default and the option to fallback to direct search is proposed below results with the following message:

"Not found? Try again with direct search."

When direct search is used, this option is replaced with:

"Slow? Switch back to indexed search."

The issue is that it isn't unclear what indexed search vs. direct search do, as link to the documentation https://musicbrainz.org/doc/Search is provided and the above messages aren't informative enough.

      1. There should be an indication in the first message that direct search is a fallback option.
      2. There should be an indication in the second message that the indexed search is the standard search. Even though direct search is slower, indexed search is also expected to return better results.
      3. There should be an additional warning message when direct search is used, because editors don't necessarily realize that they are still using a fallback.
See for example this community topic.
