tl;dr: events need a more generic credit for "this person performed on stage," like release-level performer credits
There've been at least two cases brought up where it would be valuable to document both the band as a whole and the specific performers at an event, but it's not clear how to do that, especially if "guest performer" isn't necessarily applicable. Both of these involve a series of events where different individuals may participate on any given occasion.
In my case, at least, it already doesn't quite fit the assumptions built into event artist categories. It's a variety show, performed and broadcast live, with a format more akin to a talk show than a concert with opening acts and headliners.
These are the performers:
- a host, who is the star of the show
- guest artists (individuals or bands) which change each week - perform a few songs each and may participate in other songs and skits, but generally take up no more than half the content
- a house band, which is my main reason for this ticket - usually plays intermission and outro, backs up the host or guests, and provides underscores for skits, etc
- ~3 regular cast members who act and provide sound effects
As I mentioned in my post, the host goes to host and the guest artists go to guest performers, that's straightforward enough. The remaining categories are "main performers," "support acts," and "participants," none of which fit this situation very well. I've been putting the house band and actors under "support acts" for lack of a better option, although maybe "main performers" would work as well or better.
The biggest gap is what to do with the credits for specific band members (mainly the house band, but also sometimes members of guest bands). Mostly credits for specific parts of the performance are to the band, but the specific performers are always in the credits for the show as a whole. I figure a "band lineup" is probably overreaching for now, but a more generic performer credit for an event, like release-level performer credits, would help a lot. Just something that says "this person performed [role] on stage" without being tied to particular parts of the show.
This show ran weekly for 40 years so there's a lot of data that could be entered. I will probably never get it all, but I'm going to chip away at it.
