Background: Edits 137175080 → 137175989 → 137176045.

(Edit search (or my understanding of it) doesn’t seem to handle edits narrowed per entity & date.)

Adding alias (without script), if setting Type to Search hint, Sort name is thereby greyed out, and anything written into the field is hidden but goes into edit (f.i. as in the above edit, an unsorted name pasted into the sort name field). 

If then correcting 
by emptying Sort name: “The data you have submitted does not make any changes to the data already present.”
by correcting Sort name: “The data you have submitted does not make any changes to the data already present.”

System refuses clean correction. To succed, you have to set Type from Search hint to blank (or similar) and save, then edit it again to re-set it to Search hint for a 3rd save.

 

Edit: And I’m in a loop: re-setting Type to Search hint, sort name is emptied; and because noticing that, hitting edit on the alias to correct, Sort name again has the unsorted name: https://musicbrainz.org/artist/b93c7bb5-f615-4b07-8b3d-890f96f2b2c0/edits
