To replicate:

• find a release with a recording that has "recording of [work]" with a recording date relationship added (in my case only year fields were filled)
• using relationship editor clear the begin and end date + "This relationship has ended." checkmark from the recording
• save

Result:
http://musicbrainz.org/edit/21885000 making no changes with ModBot saying "This relationship already exists".
