      For apps distributed as app bundles inside disk images for macOS it is quite common to offer a symlink to /Applications to make it easy for user to install the app. /Applications is the usual place for placing the app bundle and having the symlink makes it easy for the user to copy the app bundle over without the need to open a second Finder window.
