Artist name translation falls back to using the sort name, if no matching alias was found.
Using the sort name as "translation" was the original implementation, as initially MB didn't have aliases and also the primary use case of this option was to get latinized names for non-latin scripts.
This fallback however often leads to confusion and bug reports, see specifically PICARD-758 and PICARD-831 . Specifically PICARD-831 shows a still valid example.
I enter this new story as this really is not simply a bugfix, but a feature change. It will however resolve the open bug report.
