https://musicbrainz.org/doc/Release_Group/Type#Soundtrack asks that a release group be "a musical score". STYLE-586 goes into the nitty-gritty of groupings of recordings, but this ticket is about explicitly saying that pop singles / theme song singles aren't Soundtrack release group types.

For example, the theme song of the Titanic movie is not a soundtrack because it is not a musical score.

[STYLE-1578] Explicitly exclude pop theme songs from the Soundtrack release group type

How common is it that made-for-film singles get reissued a lot, and how often does that happen without referencing the film in any way? Most issues of https://www.discogs.com/master/134824-Celine-Dion-My-Heart-Will-Go-On-Love-Theme-From-Titanic for example seem to have a clear reference to Titanic. I haven't seen a lot of those though, so maybe I'm missing a fair amount of cases where this would be problematic. "case per case basis" still seems the most sensible approach for this though.

          > That mostly depends on how it's presented. Is it presented as "the film song", with all the cover art being film-related, etc? I'd probably still use soundtrack.

This doesn't make sense because a release group contains multiple releases. It's common for exactly one release in the group to have a front cover relating to where 16% of the tracks is used. That one release would make up 20% of the release group, whereas the remaining 80% of releases in the release group do not "present" "the film".

Is it a pop song that is presented as a pop song without making the film connection explicit, and it just happened to be used in a film? Then it doesn't seem sensible to use soundtrack.

I mean, a fair amount of soundtrack albums are "music from and inspired by" or whatever, where some songs are also not really part of the soundtrack.

          A 6-track maxi single where,

          • one track is an extended / different version of a song where an edited version was used in a movie/TV show,
          • one track is a karaoke version of that song, and
          • the other 4 tracks have nothing to do with a movie/TV show,

is by any practical standard a "RG (that) is not a soundtrack to anything nor intended as such" when only 16% of the release could be argued to be related to a "soundtrack" while 0% of the release is a musical score.

That comment was that an album of recordings of music originally made for films is not a soundtrack. I'm not sure how that's connected with pop theme songs as a whole?

If https://community.metabrainz.org/t/what-is-a-soundtrack/167398/15 is still accurate, then I don't know why we wouldn't want to codify this for users who aren't going to find a 7-year-old post.
