It seems like this relationship was designed to be used for false credits.
However, some editors use this relationship to store name variations of the writers on a Work where the names are kept separate per https://musicbrainz.org/doc/Style/Artist#Performance_names_and_legal_names. That doesn't seem correct, and it seems like it's necessary to explicitly say so. (If that actually is a valid usage of the relationship, then the description of the relationship should be updated anyway.)
As mentioned above, I'm not sure whether the relationship guideline being amended would help this at all. If you see this happening again, just point them to the guideline / point the edit to me directly, please.
