I think specifying what sort of a group an artist is is an important data point to have, whether they're a boy band like the Backstreet Boys or a rock band like The Beatles or a jazz orchestra (or Big Band) like The 8-Bit Big Band.
it might be good to have a way to mark these types as ended (perhaps even with dates, if possible), as some groups could change their formation during the course of their existence, such as a vocal group picking up instruments or even a solo project gaining a second member and becoming a group
