Right now works have no way of saying "this was written in [year]" neither as a field in itself nor as an attribute on the "author wrote [work]" relationship

Then on pages which list relationships to works (Author) these really should sort on date of the work

On work pages that list editions, these should be sorted by date of edition.

On edition pages the linked works should sort, but not by date (see own ticket for this.)
