The 'ukarere is a Tahitian strummed lute.

Description: integral lute carved from a single wood block, bowl resonator carved out from the bottom. Five frets, four nylon strings, four tuning pegs. No hollow soundbox.
Usage/History: Held horizontally across midsection and strummed or plucked.
Mainly played in Tahiti and the Cook Islands.
Difference from Hawaiian 'ukulele:
'ukulele is joined (neck and resonator made separately). 'Ukarere strings tuned an octave higher and strummed faster than 'ukulele.
