I was propagating nginx changes for the wiki switchover when I saw that daemontools (and thus none of the services) where running on carl. All attempts to get it to start have failed – how does one debug this problem?

(See comments below – this is fixed, but nrpe_local.cfg files aren't in any sort of VCS, which is the remaining issue)
