If I put in the search "Sofie Sugar" not knowing the true spelling of the artist it leads to some common problems:
      1. I won't be able to find the artist, the main issue.
      2. I may add a new duplicate artist under the incorrect spelling.

A solution is to make the default search for "Sofie Sugar" (that currently doesn't find Sophie Sugar) return the same results as the advanced fuzzy search "Sophie~ Sugar~" (that currently finds it).

Updated ticket's summary and description with the most feasible implementation according to the above comments, as Soundex is definitely not an option (as it is too anglocentric).

Seems to be that they are completely different suggestions.

Both could be done, whether they should or will be done is a different matter.

Sorry, I misunderstood. Yes that should work.

Did you read the ticket? It's asking for the defaults to be improved (such as using fuzzy searching like I used above) so that partial matches match better.

Not really related. I wouldn't expect Joe User to know how to use advanced search with operators. I would say that's more when you know Sofie is incorrect but don't know the true spelling.

I'm guessing this is related to MBS-2702, since a search like http://musicbrainz.org/search?query=Sofie%7E+Sugar&type=artist&limit=25&advanced=1 finds your example fine.
