I've seen editors sometimes want to track format (for lack of a better word) differences across digital media. This often comes up in the context of wanting to know where one can download or stream "hi-res" (i.e. 24-bit/96 kHz rather than 16/44.1) or lossless (e.g. FLAC/ALAC instead of MP3) versions of albums.
The Style/Release guidelines now clarify that new releases shouldn't be created solely on the basis of differences like the ones listed above, but it'd be nice to provide a way for editors to store this information somewhere if they want to.
One suggestion that I've seen (in this comment by tigerman325 but possibly also elsewhere) would be to add attributes that could be set on streaming/download URL relationships to provide more detail about what's actually available. I couldn't find a ticket tracking this, so I'm creating this one.
