This has lived in my brain for a while, but I was encouraged to create this ticket by this forum post suggesting the same thing.
We call them 'smart links' on ticket MBS-10229: Block smart links
The most common I see is link.tree:
https://linktr.ee/listenbrainz
And then stuff like smarturl which gets used a lot by artists when they release an album etc:
https://smarturl.it/fallingasleep
There are lots of others on MBS-10229.
Now you're asking me, if this is market is already saturated with lots of these, why should MeB get involved? A number of reasons:
- There is demand for these kind of 'quick link' pages
- We have the relationship data to pre-fill hundreds of thousands of these (!)
- re. the above, none of these other link services have the benefit of being crowd or fan-sourced (it's manual work for an artist to keep theirs updated)
- It will encourage 'casual' users to update MB with fairly foolproof edits (e.g. adding links), and click through to LB as well
- The design and development of these pages aren't very complex, compared to core MeB services
The idea for ShareBrainz/LinkBrainz/CardBrainz is that we automatically generate simplified views of artist pages, based on MBID. These pages include links to some relationship, like 'social networking' and 'music for [purchase/streaming/download]' relationships. They also include a link to the MB page, to edit, and to the LB page, to listen.
The following mockups just include 'music' and 'social networking' links for now, but this could easily be expanded to include other database links etc. One thing to keep in mind though is that we want to keep these as simple as possible - people should be sent to the MusicBrainz page if they want more detail.
We can add these for albums/release MBIDs, and maybe other entities like playlists, later as well.
Or it could be aligned with LB branding:
