Some releases have (EAN/JAN or UPC) barcode add-ons of either 2 digits (EAN-2 or UPC-2) or 5 digits (EAN-5 or UPC-5). This extension is still supported in GTIN. (See GS1 standard).
The meaning of the barcode add-on has no global meaning. Some represent the price, some represent the order of the release in a series, but other usages can be found too.
As the order in a series is very useful to identify a release, it is currently recommended by the release style guidelines (Jan 2024) to put the barcode add-on in annotation.
It should be taken into account when resolving the related MBS-3978.
