Just as in gmail and other applications, MB needs the ability to be able to use shift+select to select a range of checkboxes. This will probably not be as useful in NGS as it would have been in Mason, where its main use would have been selecting tracks on the artist->track relationship edit screen, but can still prove useful, specially when batch edits are introduced.
