My (non-auto) edit to add a disc 2 before merging has the release in a temporary state with two "CD 1", which makes it impossible to enter the merge edit before that edit has passed, since the merge UI complains that "This merge strategy is not applicable to the releases you have selected."

I think one of two things should happen:

1. The pending disc is not shown at all
2. The pending disc and new positions are used
