Say you have a CD release with a discid, and a vinyl release.
If you merge the CD release into the vinyl release, you'll end up with a medium with format vinyl that has a discid.

Real example:

Discid being added: http://musicbrainz.org/edit/13941205
merge edit: http://musicbrainz.org/edit/15762301
(the discid is not anymore attached to vinyl release, because I've fixed it)
