An email address is required for almost everything useful on the site, one of the only things you can do is put spam in your profile so you can link to it from other sites, which is something we're having a problem with.

Therefore I think it would make sense to require an email address when signing up and require a verified email address to do things like edit your profile. It shouldn't really affect valid users, as they need to do that anyway if they want to edit.
