For many older recordings, it is no longer possible to determine the release date, and it is likely that many of the original "releases" will never be entered into MusicBrainz. However, discographies and CD inlays routinely state the exact or approximate recording date. Where a song was recorded widely from the 1920s to the 1960s, with those recordings re-issued to this day, it is useful to know when the recording was made, rather than just when a particular release occurred.
