I cannot think of a reason for having it like this and maybe should be that you cannot add a date of death (I think birth is the same too - checking on a sandbox http://chirlu.mbsandbox.org/edit/33191876) that is beyond today's date (or maybe today's date + 1 day to allow for editing in different timezones)

Not sure what to call this but for now calling this issue a bug.
