Relatively heavy locks are taken when entering edits and votes; particularly for votes, where only one request at a time can enter votes, even if two requests are completely unrelated (affecting different edits and different editors). Now that edit counts (per editor) and vote counts (per edit) are no longer materialized (MBS-8719), the locking can be reduced to only the affected edits.
