[2023-05-31 02:57:34] <outsidecontext> https://blog.metabrainz.org/2023/05/31/picard-2-9-beta-1/
[2023-05-31 03:28:36] <reosarevok> "enables the option “Use standardized artist names” by default" why?
[2023-05-31 03:28:55] <reosarevok> Wouldn't that be confusing when the default names don't match the ones shown on the site for the releases?
[2023-05-31 03:29:47] <reosarevok> Or well, I get the point why, really, but it should then let the users know that it's going to happen
[2023-05-31 03:30:01] <reosarevok> Is there an intro bubble explaining it or something?
[2023-05-31 03:35:34] <outsidecontext> reosarevok: people frequently did not expect their albums for the same artist to all end up in separate folders.
[2023-05-31 03:35:52] <outsidecontext> The option itself is documented at https://picard-docs.musicbrainz.org/en/config/options_metadata.html
[2023-05-31 03:36:49] <reosarevok> Yeah, I get that too. I think either option can be confusing and I actually agree on further thought that this is a sensible default, but the user should probably be warned that the names will be changed like that since it's otherwise probably not obvious what's happening and where to change it?
[2023-05-31 03:37:38] <reosarevok> I'd even consider have a "use standard for filenaming but as-printed for music tags" option, but that might be just me, heh
[2023-05-31 03:38:16] <outsidecontext> not quite sure, what's your suggestion where to show this info? you mean an explicit warning in the options or something?
[2023-05-31 03:39:35] <reosarevok> I meant that the first time the user opens Picard we could ask "We're doing this, do you want it or should we always use whatever is printed"
[2023-05-31 03:40:02] <reosarevok> I dunno if you have any sort of intro bubbles or forms right now for new users?
[2023-05-31 03:40:10] <reosarevok> It could also just be listed in the intro guide I guess
[2023-05-31 03:40:58] <outsidecontext> we could do this if we would have some kind of first use setup wizard. but we don't yet, and I don't see this option as so special to warrant a popup just for this
[2023-05-31 03:41:31] <reosarevok> Yeah, I guess
[2023-05-31 03:41:31] <outsidecontext> There are other settings with much more impact, such as cover art handling, file renaming and moving etc.
[2023-05-31 03:41:36] <reosarevok> True
[2023-05-31 03:41:49] <reosarevok> Do you explain the defaults for those somewhere as a getting started guide?
[2023-05-31 03:41:53] <reosarevok> If so, I'd add this one there too
[2023-05-31 03:42:36] <outsidecontext> not yet I think, but sounds like a good idea
[2023-05-31 03:43:52] <outsidecontext> and yes, we really should have this first use setup wizard as well (finally)
[2023-05-31 03:48:03] <reosarevok> rdswift: ^ Maybe you have an idea where to explain this to users
[2023-05-31 03:48:29] <reosarevok> I mean, if they lived so far without an explanation of why things end up in different folders, they'll live for now without this too
[2023-05-31 03:49:16] <reosarevok> I just was asking because it'll be different from what they see on the site itself. I haven't tested the preference myself FWIW, does it show the standard name on the right pane since you load and all the time from there then?
[2023-05-31 04:51:00] <outsidecontext> Yes, it'll show the standard name on the right. That's also why I think it's ok. The user gets what they see in Picard
[2023-05-31 06:02:49] <reosarevok> Yeah. They just might be confused if they click Tagger in MB and see one thing, and then Picard shows another. But most cases probably don't ever use the Tagger option anyway, so probably minor
