That pretty much says it all. Right now everything is replaced with underscore, this should be a user choice, and have an option to not to replace, just remove the incompatible characters.
Even bigger enhancement would be to have an advanced replacement system where you could define character replacement matches. For example, / could be replaced with ~, but every other incompatible character should be removed. Users choice, of course. Worth the trouble? No idea, so I'll just throw it out there.
The discussion on the Trac ticket seems to suggest it is possible to do with scripting, but I get the impression that the former is something quite a few people would like, so perhaps it should still be an actual option in Picard.
