Many of the issues raised against search server relate to the ordering/scoring of the documments returned. However it is not possible to see how Lucene arrived at this ordering by just using the search server, and because unit tests work from artificially created indexes rather than real indexes they don't uncover, need to add an explain option purely to help us with debugging
