@toddobryan asked on the IRC chat https://webchat.freenode.net/#musicbrainz,metabrainz

"Does anyone know what the rule is for putting in Roman numeral movement numbers in classical works?" for work https://musicbrainz.org/work/696ea26e-f2aa-4bed-928e-2b321ec05b17

What we discussed in the IRC chat is in the attachments linked in this issue. We looked through here: https://wiki.musicbrainz.org/History_talk:Classical_Style_Guide#Use_of_I.2C_II_etc._should_be_restricted_to_works_with_movements

and other previous formats ie. Moonlight Sonata. The parts are in Roman Numeral and so is the composer. Is this the correct style/ formatting? This might be a good idea to add to the works guideline somewhere if it isn't there.

[STYLE-1341] Roman numeral movement numbers in classical works formatting

There's no actual indication on whether you want something changed here, so closing for now. But for the current state of things:

          For tracks (and recordings): https://musicbrainz.org/doc/Style/Classical/Track/Title

Do list key, catalog number, movement numbers, etc. if they are included as part of the titles on the release, but not otherwise; that information is already available at the work level, so it doesn't need to be forced into the track titles if the release doesn't include it. "Sonata no. 1: Allegro" is a perfectly acceptable track title, if that's what is on the release. Similarly, do not "complete" the information: if a release says "in G", there is no need to extend it to "in G major".

For works, there's currently no specific guideline about their titles. As long as they're recognizable, that's enough. Personally I use Roman numerals for movements, and "No. 1" or whatnot for parts of a collection ("5 Piano Pieces: No. 1. Romance in C minor" or whatever).
