more connections for events

      background

in this talk, release groups are described as "this album you're really talking about, it's pink floyd's the wall"

that works very well for studio albums, and musicbrainz is structured to support everything about that. when talking about "the wall," one may think about the the tour or film, but it's likely the album comes to mind first.

the tour can be connected to the release group as a tour in support of, and live recordings can be linked.

in the wall example, the release group feels like the "home page". if you go to the release group page for the wall, you should be able to find anything related to the the wall you're looking for.

      pain point

this all falls apart with what i think of as "live only" releases.

with live releases, the event/tour happened before the releases, so the event/tour seems like it should fill the role of "home page."

Europe '72 and The Baker's Dozen are good examples of how the event pages aren't quite ready to fill that role yet

Europe '72 doesn't have any events created, so i'll use a the baker's dozen.

the attached image with fewer arrows illustrates relationships surrounding  red velvet night, minus track-level connections. in my ideal scenario everything in that image would be one click away from the event series and the event(s)

which could end up looking like

      whatiwant.jpg

i drew a lot of lines, hopefully this section describes my thought process behind them

event series <--> box set release group

missing some way to communicate that, in the words of a press release

The Complete Baker’s Dozen Box Set includes every note of music from the historic 13-night run" on 36 discs.

event series <--> release group series

livephish has the entire run listed as a package, and the listing page notes

Get all thirteen shows for the price of twelve

i don't have a good word for it, but there isn't a way to say "this release group series consists entirely of the complete recordings of shows from this event series,"

      event <–> release group

the only relationships between release groups and events available are launch event and
performed at. "performed at" really makes sense in "the wall" example but not in this one, again, unsure on words, but i would like to convey "this release group consists entirely of the complete recording of this show"

      release <--> event

"recorded at" is available here, but it doesn't appear anywhere on the release group, and the wording doesn't feel quite right. i drew the lines in whatiwant.jpg more from the perspective of navigation than actual schema connections. i just want to make sure all the pages lead back to the event/event series easily. i think release group <--> event might be easier to manage as a relationship than trying to pull data up from releases on the release group page

CDs 7 and 8 in the box set <--> event

      the livephish press release says

Included in the fully custom box are all 13 individually packaged shows,

i'm not sure what exactly i'm looking for here, maybe box set release media grouping? maybe something in the style of "recorded at: ... (tracks 1-7)" when you do credits at the bottom but with discs?

       thank you

for taking the time to read this!
