For Releases and Release Groups of compilations, there has been confusion around how to apply Artist Credits in the case that the release cover contains marketing text highlighting a few of the included artists.  

Current guidelines suggest that if the release includes any actual proper credit, that should be used (https://musicbrainz.org/doc/Style/Artist_Credits)

> Artist credits should generally follow the actual credit used on the release / track, including the join phrases.

The Various Artists special purpose artist only appears under "Unknown and untitled".

The guidelines should be adjusted to clarify when Various Artists is an appropriate artist credit for releases with appropriate conditions above and beyond "unknown and untitled".   For example, if text on the cover with artist names appears to be marketing or non-identity centric, or when the release contains tracks from other artists than those listed,  then Various Artists can be used.
