The video appearance relationship is a good way of tracking who is / is not present in a music video. However due to the nature of the medium, directors/producers may choose to use archive footage from other sources within the video.
An example would be:

Which includes archive footage of 60s pop star Fabian Forte (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seen_the_Light)
Fabian Forte is added as a visual appearance but there is no way of indicating that he appears within archive footage in the video. I know that IMDb has this option, and is often used within documentary listings (e.g. Michael Jackson [archive footage])
