Proposed change to https://musicbrainz.org/doc/Style/Recording#Artist to read:

The recording artist should match the name most commonly used on track listings of official releases (see Style/Release#Track_artist). If the recording does not appear on any official releases, use the most commonly credited artist name.

      That would replace this text:
The artist should usually be the same as in the track listing of the first release of the recording (see Style/Release#Track_artist).

The situation that inspires this is common in jazz, where an eponymous group name like the "Some Person Quintet" may be used interchangeably on releases with "Some Person". The 1947 recording of 'Round Midnight first came out on a 78 as the "Thelonious Monk Quintet" (which never really existed as a group) but has subsequently appeared almost always credited to Thelonious Monk alone.

      See forum thread https://community.metabrainz.org/t/eponymous-groups-and-recordings/653729 .
