There are a few things I find off about https://wiki.musicbrainz.org/Style/Artist/With_multiple_names :
1) It doesn't mention Artist Credits nearly enough. We can achieve much, much more now using artist credits without creating new performance name entities left and right. The answer to "Does it always make sense to create distinct entries?" in particular could use something to denote that it's a good idea to use Artist Credits for this.
2) "But, what if the musician had multiple different legal names?" - now that we can date and "expire" aliases, I would think to name the legal name artist by their current legal name and have old legal name(s) listed in the aliases (and possibly disambig.).

There might be more oddities as well.
