The latest schema change release finally brought us the ability to use artist credits on relationships, eliminating the need to add separate artists for pen names, legal names and the like. We can now have all of an artist's work in one place and use the artist credit field to delineate name variations.
This presents a bit of a problem in certain situations:
1) Songwriting credits tend to be presented differently in release liner notes than they are in rights society databases. Databases usually list writers by their full legal name (or a chosen alias/pen name) and release liner notes tend to use writers' preferred professional or pen name.
Example: Dan Hill is credited under his regular performance name in the songwriting credits on "I Do (Cherish You)", while he is credited for writing the song under his full name "Daniel Grafton Hill" in BMI's Repertoire database.
2) Similarly to the above, artists with names typically written in scripts other than the Latin alphabet will sometimes have their names listed in Latin script inside release liner notes (while in their original script in certain databases).
Example: Toshihiko Takamizawa is identified as "T. Takamizawa" in the songwriting credits on GO! GO! BE∀T BOYS!!, while in JASRAC's J-WID database he is identified as 高見沢俊彦 on those songs.
3) Artist credits can sometimes vary between editions of a release.
Example: Lorraine Crosby is identified as "Mrs. Loud" on some editions of Bat out of Hell II: Back Into Hell, while she is credited as Lorraine Crosby on others.
Since release-level credits are confined to that one release, they should reflect what is printed on that exact release. In the case of work- and recording-level relationships, they should reflect what is printed on the earliest known release. I am aware this does not offer the best fix in the case of credits that change across different releases: this can be addressed in a separate MBS ticket.
