In general, sort names are supposed to be entered as family name first, given name last. This isn't always desired by users, but it may also not necessarily be how sort names function in some locales. My pie-in-the-sky wish is that (artist) (person) (alias) sort names are split into two compnents (family name vs. given name), which would give software the new ability to sort by given name.
(Seen from the other angle, it would give users the new ability to download transliterations from MusicBrainz, because if the user doesn't like sorting by family name first, they are probably blanket deleting the artistsort field that comes out of MusicBrainz.)
Alternatively/additionally, aliases could be given a new "transliteration" attribute where the sort name is supposed to mirror the presentation of the display name without any changes other than the script of the text - in other words, without shuffling the words around based on a style guideline.
