Here is the current redundancy:

• Release events happen in a country the list of which is localized (in server code) by translators.
• These countries are mapped to areas having a country code.
• Areas have localized aliases maintained (in database) by area editor.

As this redundancy cannot really be avoided, it should at least be checked for consistency. It could be implemented in a one-off script which would check that every release country localized name is an alias for the same area and locale, if not the primary alias. Otherwise, the list of inconsistencies should be looked after by the developer and forwarded to area editor and translators as needed.
