MusicBrainz (not sure if other MBz services send many emails?) sends a lot of emails, but doesn't really leverage them to be helpful and inviting to users.
Initial thoughts:
- Some colour and imagery wouldn't hurt
- The very first 'subscription' email users get should explain the process a bit
- We can send an one-time email to users during certain milestones, to help encourage them to come back, but also to explain things that can make users drop out (e.g. when their first open edits pass, we can let them know)
- Maybe we can include some random interesting things in the odd subscription email (stats, suggestions...)
- Moods: friendly, encouraging, community
Quora and some other sites really leverage this to the next level (e.g. 'someone has asked this question that you may want to answer...), and it works very well.
