Currently a lot of artist overview pages simply show "This artist does not have any release groups". Example:[1]
That's not much of an "overview". I think the artist's overview page should give a much broader view of "what this artist has done"
As a start: If no release groups, show release groups where they appear in some form: Ones where a credited recording appears, ones where an AR'd recording appears, something.
Maybe for this 'fallback' kind of display, limit the set of displayed releases to be the most recent few, and just enough to be able to show a release for every recording where this artist appears.
For the given example, indicate the fact that he has appeared as a double bass instrumentalist, which should appear as a link to the relevant relationships section.
Overview should not be blank unless there is really nothing to say about the artist.

[MBS-4300] Artist overview page should be a real overview
I believe we need a mechanism that allows editor to choose components that go on an artists overview page. Eric Clapton the artist is much more than his solo career. Have a lookup for adding 3-6 artists to go on his page, Blind Faith, Cream, Yardbirds wouldn't take much space. Our relationships capabilities are lacking on all fronts, as evidenced by so many empty overviews.
I'd like to see standalone recordings listed on the overview page as well (at all times if possible, not only on the fallback display). It would really help with fixing artists with same name that have their recordings scrambled over multiple entities. Currently you need to search through all of the artist's recordings which is very time consuming.
Good idea, the current overview is underwhelming, and should show key important information. I'd like to see it show the first dozen entries for: (a) Releases (Albums) (b) Recordings (c) Works (d) Events (e) Band/group membership. Better yet if it was "dashboard" style with several panels for each type of information.
This would also make it easier to navigate an Artist's information, and puts them into a better context.
Other suggested 'fallbacks':
- display membership and performance (using the "perform as" relationship) information.
- display works
I think overview pages are most important we have. How difficult would it be to allow editors to design /choose which components go on the overview pages for artists, bands, labels, companies?
